Standards' Compliant Web Site Construction

You may ask: Why choose standards compliance? Or, What does W3 Teck mean when we say that we deliver standards complaint web sites construction?

The standards that we are interested in here are those published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) including web accessibility guidelines published by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI)

Some may tell you that Standards also means using pure CSS and not using tables for page layout and completely removing presentation from content through the use of CSS. Some may also include building semantically correct (X)HTML as part of the standards. While this is a lofty goal, and something the W3 Teck strives for, these are not standards. The pure and simple fact is that this is not 100% attainable at this time. We do not make this statement lightly as these are things that we at W3 Teck believe in and try to attain. However, until the tools (web browsers) that people use to surf the web and the tools that site owners user to edit their pages can understand an implement these ideals, those that do the development work are handicapped.

Some may go the other way and tell you that the standards that we mentioned are not standards at all; that they are merely guidelines, and they are correct. There is no governing body that enforces the use of these guidelines. Those that do abide by these guidelines do so voluntarily and many of those that do call them standards because we have adopted them as such. The reason that W3 Teck strives for standards compliance is because we believe in them. We believe that if everyone embraced the guidelines as standards that the web would be a better place for all of us; those that work with it and those that use it.

Web sites that follow these guidelines also have other benefits. One of these is that a site built to these guidelines is more easily indexed by search engines. While many factors effect search result placement, sites that are more easily indexed are more likely to show up in the search results. More about this in our discussion of what it means for a site to be SEO Friendly.
